Still meditating.
It has been a while since I have written about meditation, mostly due to a necessary period of less experimentation and more in the trenches work. The past couple months felt like a gently sloping plateau. As with any practice these leveling off periods are very important for opening pathways of evolution. In essence it was an interval of contraction in the learning cycle, where I was...

Local gems in the NY winter
First off, this is a big “Thank you” to all the devoted farmers and artisans who brave the sub freezing weather to continue to bless us city dwellers with their amazing foods.
After receiving an email that my favorite farmer, Kira of Evolutionary Organics, would not be at the market this week due to the frigid temps and a bout of transportation trouble, I was considering staying warm...

Something about cats
At first, I just thought it was a quirky thing that my roommate’s cat, Henry, does. He is calm and content to sit in the window, often without me even realizing he has snuck into my room, until I begin meditating. After a few minutes of quietude here comes Henry to use my still body as a rubbing post. Needless to say, I have to get up and put him outside so that I can concentrate....

A change of pace
I made my way back home last week to spend the holidays with my family. The combination of travel, an unfamiliar environment, a less regimented schedule, and the inclusion of some homemade holiday goodies has thrown me off a bit. I have been able to mostly maintain my meditation, just missing a couple of days over the weekend, but my meditations have been very restless and by the end of 20...

Go With Full Confidence
Don’t worry about anything. Worry never brings any benefit to anyone. On the other hand, it spoils even the little that you might do. There is a beautiful saying I read on a daily calender page many years ago. It said, “Sorrow is nothing but what you borrow.” Nobody is going to give you that. You...
I was so happy to share the simple Green Quinoa and Roasted Poblano Soup with all the amazing people at Rich’s dinner party last night. Thanks for inviting us, Rich. And for everyone else, I would love to cook for you anytime.
Nora, thanks for the soup shout-out. I had your Chocolate Whiskey Cake this morning for breakfast. Best breakfast ever.

All good things...
—with a slight delay—
L informed me that today is a new moon. It feels fitting to end this fast on the eve of a new beginning.
The week of fasting brought very chaotic meditations, and even more bizarre dreams. I was not extremely diligent in maintaining both of my meditation sessions per day, and found it difficult to sit still for very long. The unbalancing effects of the...
Over the hump
It is always the first three to four days of a fast that are hardest. most of it entails being patient and letting your body adjust to the change in routine and energy. On each of the fasts I have experienced in the past, somewhere during day three and on to day four a shift happens.
First, I get pretty cranky and really hungry. Then, as that subsides, very profound feelings of restfulness...

{ raw fermented foods are f-ing awesome }
We’ve been busy this summer and fall, fermenting everything we can get our hands on- making sauerkraut and salsas, dill pickles and kimchi, coconut water kefir and rosehip kombucha. It was sort of serendipitous how it happened, as our entire fermentation obsession started from one conversation I had with a best friend’s father at her lovely wedding in Canada. But first, an aside if I may. We...

Meditating (like a ninja)
When life gets crazy, it is trickier to always find the time to sneak everything in. Late nights at the computer writing code, exploring database strategies, building information relationships, and tweaking user interfaces often lead me to rising later than intended. On occasion I hurry out the door and forgo my morning meditation, disrupting my flow. Here are a couple of ways I have...
